A large part of this is due to the fact that I completed my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, but also as an educator (Brown University, 1970-75), and have observed the liberal arts curriculum from a first-hand perspective (Brown University) In my opinion, education should integrate the study of art into other areas of study. It's not unusual for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! My ethnomusicology degree, which I started in 1975 at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within the department of music in the College of Letters and Science. Being able to explore multiple areas of interest is something that I truly like. It's great to teach both graduate and undergraduate students. I am an published author of three books: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing Music and Expressing Culture. In addition, I have a variety of periods where I am pursuing primarily academic activities with periods when I add administrative duties to my schedule (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair of The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chair of the Group in Asian Studies from 1999, and now Chair of the Department of Music again).
